Title:  Residential Heater Registrations, Linn County, Iowa

Cedar Rapids, IA — On September 16, 2009, the Linn County Board of Supervisors approved revisions to the Linn County Code of Ordinances (LCCO) that impacts residential heaters.  The revised LCCO requires owners or operators of indirect-fired residential heaters that burn solid fuels to submit a registration permit application for these sources.  This registration permit requirement pertains to all indirect-fired residential heaters, existing or new, unless otherwise specifically exempt under the LCCO.

Registration permit applications for units installed prior to October 1, 2009, are due February 28, 2010.  All applications received after February 28 for these existing units will require the owner to provide documentation that the unit was installed prior to October 1, 2009.

All new units shall apply for and receive a permit prior to installation.

Effective October 1, 2009, only indirect-fired residential heaters which meet the 0.6 lb/mmBTU particulate matter emission standard pursuant to LCCO 10.8(2)”b” are allowed to be installed in Linn County. Units that were installed prior to October 1, 2009, are exempt from the 0.6 lb/mmBTU standard provided specified protective requirements are met.
